My friend Cleveland introduced me to farm fresh eggs a few years ago and I fell in love with the delicious flavor. This spring my husband, Davis, and I decided to buy a few chicks of our own. After researching different breeds and calling the local farm and feed stores, I decided on Araucanas and Silver Laced Wyandottes. Both breeds are quite friendly and make pretty good pets. The Araucanas lay blue eggs while the Wyandottes are brown egg layers. They actually don’t start lying until they are about 6-7 months old so until then, we will just have a few pet chickens.
For the first few weeks the chicks have to stay in a box with a heat lamp to keep warm. On their first day they immediately took to the feeder. One thing for sure, they won’t leave each other’s side.
We don’t have names picked out for them yet so send along suggestions if you have some good ideas.
Now about 4 weeks old they have lost their fuzz (and some of their cuteness) and are quickly growing out of the cardboard box. Next step – getting Davis to build a chicken coop!
