The Rowdy Three

This is the site for the garden and chicken house. Davis is beginning to measure so we can attempt to actually plant in straight rows.
Basic frame work is up and Davis works to frame out the nesting and egg laying area.
The project is complete! Notice the beautiful rusted tin roof. I admit I was not much help with the exception of making sure Davis had an ongoing supply of cold beer.
Move in Day – we generally use any excuse to have a dinner party!

...and their new digs

Now that our baby chicks are well on their way to becoming full-grown chickens, they need a permanent home. Fortunately for me, Davis is quite handy with a hammer and nail so I have commissioned him to build a small chicken coop. Well, I have come to realize that Davis’ idea of small is not exactly my idea, but I’m not complaining because these chicks now have quite an estate.

After a little online research and chat with a few fellow chicken owners, Davis dreamed up his plans and went to work. The biggest challenge was constructing the A frame roof without any specific architectural plans. He put in a lot of hard work, and I must admit, I am quite proud!

While Davis built the house, I took on the project of planting the garden. I have planted quite a variety of vegetables and more than likely, too many tomatoes. I am trying to stick to mostly heirloom varieties this year and it will be fun to see how they all turn out over the course of the summer. I also planted peppers, okra, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, herbs, butter beans, green beans, and my favorite, Silver Queen Corn.

Stay tuned for lots of upcoming tomato recipes and by summer’s end, I hope to become a pro at pickling.
