When people ask me what surprises them most about moving to Athens, the answer is rarely what I expect. It’s not the restaurants — though those are extraordinary. It’s not the walkability or the architecture or the green space. More often than not, it’s this: they had no idea Athens had a craft beer and spirits scene this good.
And it is genuinely good. Not “good for a college town” good. Not “good for a city this size” good. Just good — full stop. The kind of scene that draws visitors from Atlanta specifically to make the rounds, that has earned national press and international awards, and that adds a dimension to daily life in Athens that buyers from larger cities find both surprising and deeply satisfying.
Here’s your guide to every stop worth making.
01 — Downtown Athens
Creature Comforts Brewing Co.
There is no more fitting place to start than where Athens craft beer arguably began its national moment. Located in a former tire shop in downtown Athens, the Creature Comforts taproom showcases reclaimed materials and signage from the building’s early days — and it is one of the most beautiful brewery spaces in the South. Two UGA alumni returned to Athens and renovated the former Snow Tire building into a go-to spot for fine craft beer, and what they built has become something genuinely extraordinary. Tropicalia, their flagship IPA, is one of the most acclaimed craft beers in America — the only beer to ever crack the top 200 beers in America on Beer Advocate. They are the Official Taproom and Official Craft Beer of the University of Georgia Athletics, and their ever-rotating lineup of seasonals, sours, and experimental releases gives even the most devoted regulars a reason to come back. The covered patio is one of the best outdoor drinking spaces in Athens, and Cask Nights on Tuesdays are a weekly institution. If you make only one stop on this list, make it here.
02 — Westside Athens
Terrapin Beer Co.
Terrapin Beer Co. on Newton Bridge Road is Athens’ original craft brewery — and after more than two decades, it remains one of the most beloved afternoon destinations in the city. The Terrapin taproom offers a welcoming indoor space and a spacious outdoor beer garden with a rotating lineup of year-round brews, seasonal specials, and experimental releases straight from the source, alongside regular live music, pet-friendly lawns, and brewery tours. Tropicalia fans, Classic City Lager loyalists, and adventurous drinkers chasing the latest seasonal release all find their way here — and the relaxed, unhurried energy of the Terrapin taproom on a Friday afternoon is one of those Athens experiences that is very hard to replicate anywhere else.
03 — Normaltown
Normaltown Brewing Co.
Nestled in the heart of Athens, Normaltown Brewing is a small-batch brewery dedicated to crafting high-quality IPAs with bold flavors and fresh ingredients — with a passion for hop-forward profiles that ensures beer lovers get a consistent and exciting experience with each pour. Beyond the beer, Normaltown Brewing is all about creating a welcoming, Cheers-like atmosphere where everyone feels at home — with friendly faces, great conversation, and a laid-back vibe that makes their taproom the perfect spot to unwind. Part of the Athens Beer Trail, Normaltown Brewing is a neighborhood anchor that perfectly captures what makes this part of Athens so special: quality, community, and genuine character in every pint.
04 — Normaltown
Athentic Brewing Company
Founded by longtime friends Paul Skinner and Mark Johnson, what started as a small homebrewing hobby quickly grew into a passion for crafting high-quality, refreshing beers — without the gimmicks. Located in the heart of Normaltown at 108 Park Avenue, Athentic is more than just a brewery — it’s a community hub in the truest sense of the word. Live jazz every Thursday, bluegrass jam sessions, trivia nights, Latin dance socials, food trucks, and a 16-tap lineup of rotating craft beers make Athentic the kind of place where something is always happening and everyone is always welcome. Their mission is to celebrate their roots, enjoy the present, and cultivate a beer community based on quality products and neighborhood involvement — and they live that mission every single day. The outdoor patio is one of the liveliest spots in Normaltown on a warm evening, and the inside venue — with its small stage and multiple gathering areas — has become one of Athens’ most versatile live music destinations.
05 — Westside Athens
Akademia Brewing Company
Akademia is a full-service brewpub open for lunch and dinner seven days a week — and its location on Crane Drive on the Westside makes it one of the most convenient and consistently rewarding spots on this list. Founded in 2017 by two homebrewers who turned a shared passion into something genuinely special, Akademia crafts distinct ales with unique twists alongside a pub fare menu inspired by seasonal ingredients. Beer-braised pork chops, beeramisu, and an ever-rotating tap list of creative ales make it the kind of place where you can spend an entire afternoon without once checking the time. For Westside residents especially, Akademia is the kind of neighborhood anchor that makes daily life feel genuinely charmed.
06 — Wire Park, Oconee County
South Main Brewing
Part of the exciting Wire Park development in Watkinsville, South Main Brewing is Oconee County’s first craft brewery — and it has quickly become one of the most compelling reasons to make the short drive from Athens for an afternoon. Set within the adaptive reuse of the former Southwire industrial facility, South Main brings a relaxed, community-forward taproom energy to Watkinsville’s most exciting new development, alongside the restaurants, boutiques, live music, and farmers market that make Wire Park a genuine destination. If you haven’t been to Wire Park yet, South Main is the perfect excuse to go.
07 — Macon Highway, Athens
Oak House Distillery & Speakeasy
And then there’s the one that stops people in their tracks when they hear about it for the first time. Oak House Distillery on Macon Highway is Athens’ first legal distillery since the 1860s — a purpose-built operation behind the historic Henry Bishop farmhouse, producing award-winning botanical gins and Jamaican-style rums in a setting that is genuinely unlike anything else in Georgia. The speakeasy lounge, set beneath ancient oak trees on two acres of grounds, offers expertly crafted cocktails, weekend live music, and distillery tours that walk you through the production process from grain to glass. It’s the kind of place that converts first-time visitors into regulars — and the kind of destination that makes buyers from larger cities realize that Athens has something they weren’t expecting: genuine craft spirit culture with a sense of place that is entirely its own.
Athens has always been a city that punches above its weight. The music, the food, the culture — all of it exceeds what you’d expect from a city of 130,000 people. The craft beer and spirits scene is no different. It’s one of the quiet pleasures of living here — the kind of thing that becomes part of your regular routine and never stops being a source of genuine delight.
If you’re thinking about making Athens home, I’d love to show you around — starting, perhaps, with a pint.
